Xiong Wei, born in August 1988, is a member of the Communist Party of China. He is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the w88 casino of Statistics at the w88 casino. In August 2015, with full enthusiasm for education, I traveled thousands of miles to come to the University of International w88 and Economics, and started an indissoluble bond with Huiyuan. Teach a class well, teach a class well, teach every class well. I remember the first time I stood on the podium in Room 201 of the Bo Xue Building. 140 pairs of eyes looked at me. There were thirst for knowledge, expectations of new teachers, and silent doubts. At that moment, I secretly made up my mind: I must make this cold class of linear algebra glow with warmth. Occasionally I saw students talking about the new teacher on Tieba, which inspired me to fight even more. In order to stand firm on the stage, I observed high-quality courses, collected interesting cases, reduced myself to a mathematics novice, and repeatedly pondered the cognitive difficulties of students. I made my own comic version of the review guide, added exercise classes on weekends, and held voluntary review classes for all students in the w88 casino before the exam. After half a year of dedication, the students finally confessed their true feelings: "I really like Teacher Little Bear" and "I really can't let go of Sister Little Bear!". As a class teacher, I carefully build a spiritual home for every student: I regularly invite outstanding alumni to carry out postgraduate study/study abroad/competition experience workshops every semester, and I personally write greeting cards every holiday. I hope students can not only learn the methods, but also see the many possibilities in the future. From the Chinese chanting to the drama festival, from the song and dance challenge to the glorious moment of the 70th anniversary of the National Day military parade, they not only shine on the stage, but also work hard academically. Last year, I met a special girl. When she took my mathematical statistics class, her eyes always sparkled with curiosity. She always likes to talk to me about the cutting-edge development of big data. When she talks about her scientific research dreams, her face is filled with the unique brilliance of youth. I took her to the team meeting and guided her to participate in the National Statistical Modeling Competition. Sure enough, she lived up to expectations and won the first prize in Beijing. However, as the course ended, she never showed up in my office again. Until one evening in April this year, I saw that familiar figure again. The moment she saw me, her tears suddenly burst into tears. It turned out that in the past few months, she had experienced the heartbreak of a broken love and a sharp decline in her grades. The girl who once had bright eyes now looked so dim that it made people feel distressed. The wind was very soft that day. I took her for a walk on campus, bought her strawberry-flavored ice cream, listened to her story, and stayed silent with her. Gradually, her frown relaxed, and her long-lost smile reappeared. The next day I received her WeChat message: "Teacher, thank you, you allowed me to see the dawn of life again..." At that moment, I finally understood that the true meaning of education is never just the transfer of knowledge, but also the protection of the growth of every young life.
Concentrate on scientific research and inherit ingenuity
Scientific research is the foundation of a university teacher. I insist on doing scientific research sincerely, doing real scientific research, and pursuing long-term research. As a doctoral supervisor, I have grown from being a young supervisor with only two master's students to now being able to guide more than 15 master's and doctoral students every year. I have always held the belief that a supervisor is not only an academic guide, but also a companion in life. I have established a trinity training model to hone basic academic skills through intensive reading of literature and 2 group meetings every week. The long conversations by the lake, the collision of ideas at the dinner table, and the heated academic discussions have woven into precious memories of our common growth. I purchased high-performance hosts for students at my own expense and took the initiative to bear their round-trip travel expenses to attend the conference. It is because of this persistence that the team has published 11 articles in Class A journals in the past three years, with a doctoral degree rate of 40%, and has gone to universities such as the University of Hong Kong, Peking University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences for further study. Students also shine on various stages. There are outstanding graduates from Beijing, national scholarship winners, champions of the top ten singers competition on campus, and presidents of martial arts associations. There are also students who hold important positions in the Hong Kong Department of Health and serve the society professionally.
Work together to create a better future
As the head of the department, I am fully aware of the huge responsibilities on my shoulders. "Little Bear, why are you so motivated every day?" Faced with this question, my answer is always the same: it's love, and more importantly, responsibility. On the journey of discipline construction, we have achieved breakthroughs again and again with the spirit of paving the way over mountains and building bridges when encountering rivers: the statistics major was approved in 2020, and the data science major enrolled students in 2024. Now the w88 casino of Statistics has established a complete undergraduate, master, and doctoral training system, which embodies the wisdom and sweat of all teachers in the department. In countless arguments that stayed up late at night, and in the process of continuous improvement, I used practical actions to explain that success does not have to be mine, but success must be due to my spirit of responsibility. Looking back from a new historical starting point, the footprints of these struggles not only record the growth of the department, but also indicate a more glorious future for the statistics discipline.
Huiyuan has been together through thick and thin for ten years. Today, when I stand here and look back at the journey, I finally understand: the so-called educating people means planting the seeds of hope in the years and guarding the blossoms of a tree with heart. This protection carries the solemn promise of “educating people for the party and educating talents for the country” and interprets the eternal true meaning of “it takes ten years to cultivate trees and a hundred years to cultivate people”. In the future, I would like to continue to be a lamplighter running in Huiyuan, using my original intention as a torch to illuminate my youthful expedition; turning my persistence into light, the warmth will flow through the years.
