Teacher Profile

Zuo Haicong, born in February 1966, is from Chenzhou, Hunan. He is currently a professor at the Law w88 casino of the w88 casino, chief expert of the Foreign Rule of Law Research Institute, and doctoral supervisor.

1984-1995, studied at the Law w88 casino of Wuhan University and received bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in law. From 1994 to 2007, he worked at the Institute of International Law of Wuhan University, serving as a lecturer (1994), associate professor (1996) and professor (2002). He served as a visiting scholar at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands (1998-1999) and a Fulbright Research Scholar at Georgetown University in the United States (2005-2006). In September 2007, he was transferred to Nankai University Law w88 casino and served as the Dean of the Law w88 casino from September 2007 to June 2017. This year marks my 30th anniversary as a teacher. I will share with you my experience of teaching in colleges and universities for 30 years. I would like to start from three aspects: teaching and learning, teaching and scientific research, and the worries and joys of the teaching profession.

The relationship between teaching and learning: teaching and learning

Teacher teaching and student learning are two aspects of the university classroom. Judging only from the scenarios presented in the classroom, teaching and learning can be divided into two typical forms: teachers teaching and students accepting, and teachers and students discussing together. Han Yu said that "teachers preach, impart knowledge, and resolve doubts" emphasize the dominant position of teachers, which can be attributed to the form of teachers teaching and students accepting. What is mentioned in the Analects of Confucius, "One can become a teacher by reviewing the past and learning the new", "Learning without thinking will lead to failure, and thinking without learning will lead to peril". It does not mean that students only need to learn and think, but that teachers and students study together, and teachers also need to review the past and learn the new. Therefore, Confucius’ classroom teaching should belong to the latter form. Some teachers in American law schools adopt the Socratic discussion method, which emphasizes that teachers and students discuss together. The teacher assigns students tasks to answer questions or make presentations before class, and teachers and students discuss with each other in class. However, some American law w88 casino teachers adopt the method of teacher teaching and student acceptance. I personally use a combination of lectures, student presentations, and teacher-student discussions. During the teaching process, some questions will be set in advance, or some questions will be asked randomly for students to answer and comment on; students will also be asked to make classroom presentations. The content presented by the students involves some key concepts and typical cases. During the presentation, I will guide the students to discuss.

In my opinion, the key to properly handling the relationship between teaching and learning is to treat students as the subject of learning, stimulate students' interest in learning, interact with teachers and students, and treat each round of teaching by teachers as a new round of discussion. On the one hand, students are the main subjects of learning, and the classroom is mainly the process of students' learning. Teachers' teaching is to guide students to learn rather than instill their own knowledge into students. On the other hand, each round of teaching by teachers is also a research process. Through discussions with students, they further deepen their understanding of many issues in this subject. In short, it is "focusing on learning, and teaching and learning." Focusing on learning and teaching, it is also reflected in the guidance of undergraduate thesis. Both teachers and students benefit by guiding students to identify problems, use materials, and formulate and demonstrate ideas.

The relationship between teaching and scientific research: teaching and research complement each other

University teachers are both teachers and researchers. How to deal with the relationship between teaching and scientific research is a problem that every teacher must face throughout his career. First of all, there is no priority between teaching and scientific research. Teachers must first take good classes. This is a basic requirement, but it does not mean that teaching is the main thing. Scientific research is the teacher's job, and scientific research results are also the main threshold for teacher title promotion, but it cannot be said that scientific research is the main thing. Secondly, we must balance the relationship between the two, promote scientific research through teaching, and promote teaching through scientific research, so that the two can achieve mutual success. Third, teachers should explore ways to achieve mutual success in teaching and scientific research.

I have been teaching for thirty years, and I have always insisted on teaching undergraduates. Teaching is my job; I have also always insisted on doing research, and research is also my job. I find that teaching often brings me research inspiration and promotes my scientific research. When I feel that the subject is immature, I will study the basic issues and difficult issues of the subject, so I want to write my own textbook; when I am stuck on a certain issue, I can often find valuable research topics after class thinking, which may lead to the production of papers; when discussing difficult issues with students, thinking about the problem may stimulate academic interest.

I also find that research enhances and enhances my teaching. Textbooks are written for a more scientific subject system, and the writing of textbooks improves the systematicity of teaching; when each cutting-edge issue is clearly studied, the teaching content will be richer and more cutting-edge; when some long-debated and difficult issues are clarified, the teaching will be clearer and more accurate.

The joys and sorrows of the teaching profession: never change the joy

Teachers are those who cultivate morality and cultivate people. In the growth of students, teachers will feel sincere joy; in creating knowledge, they will have a sense of accomplishment; when research results are cited and disseminated, there will be a sense of permanence or eternity; in serving the society, they will feel social recognition and social value. At the same time, teachers face a variety of worries. Young teachers are called green peppers and are under a lot of pressure; students encounter difficulties in their growth and need to provide advice and help; knowledge creation is not easy and requires continuous climbing; as experts, sometimes they want to be technical, but solving practical problems is not the norm in our lives.

Confucius said about Yan Hui, "With a basket of food and a ladle of drink, in a back alley, people can't bear their worries, but they won't change their happiness even after returning home." Nowadays, teachers have economic benefits that are no less than those of other professions and can live a decent life. Are they worry-free? Nowadays, teachers have better research conditions and can enjoy the joy of educating and creating. Isn’t it a pleasure? I think that although we are not in the era of "one basket of food and one ladle of drink", modern teachers still remain indifferent to and unworried about material life, and their joy and pursuit of creating knowledge and cultivating people with moral character remain unchanged. In this way, we may be able to avoid feeling worried, not changing our joy, and enjoy it without getting tired of it.
