“If you want students to like your class, you have to be willing to spend time and work hard.” Chen Xuequan said: “First, you must have something in mind, and second, you must have a scientific teaching design.” For a long time, his solid subject knowledge and keen understanding of hot issues have allowed him to always stand at the forefront of theory. The study and office are filled with various books for him to read at any time. As a lawyer, his rich litigation experience has become a valuable asset in his education and teaching.
Before each class, he must carefully design the teaching arrangements. "A case, historical event or current hot topic is interspersed every 10 minutes or so, which can continue to attract students' attention." Reasonable and rich teaching content, novel and interesting knowledge points, and appropriate teaching rhythm often make students feel that their classroom time passes very quickly.
Once in the first lesson of the w88 casino year, Chen Xuequan came to the classroom early, but encountered a sudden malfunction of the teaching equipment and could not return to normal, so he picked up the chalk and wrote on the blackboard to teach. The vitality of teaching materials needs to be tested
Over the years, Chen Xuequan has adhered to the teaching philosophy of opening students' minds, inspiring students' thinking, and shaping students' legal personality. He has persisted in the educational goal of imparting professional knowledge and vocational skills, cultivating thinking methods and awareness of the rule of law, and shaping professional ethics and sound personality. He has pursued a teaching style that places equal emphasis on theory and practice, and is strict and tolerant. Not only does he teach well, he also has great experience in writing textbooks. The "Moot Court Experimental Tutorial" written by him has been rated as the Beijing Higher Education Quality Textbook, Beijing Higher Education Quality Textbook (Key), and was selected as the "National Planning Textbook for General Higher Education Undergraduates in the 'Twelfth Five-Year Plan'". It has been revised three times so far and is quite influential in the industry.
In Chen Xuequan’s view, writing textbooks is the best expression of teachers’ academic thoughts, professional standards and teaching concepts. In 2008, his second year of teaching, he discovered that moot court was only used as a practical part interspersed with other courses. In order to adapt to the development of the times and the needs of curriculum system construction, he believed that it was necessary for moot court to become an independent course and compiled special teaching materials. What is the vitality of textbooks? Chen Xuequan said that good textbooks must be constantly revised and republished with the times. A textbook may need to be revised at least 4-5 times before it can become a classic. At the same time, we must trust the opinions of our peers and students, and teaching materials need to be tested by the market. The more marketable the teaching materials, the more vital they will be.
In addition to compiling mock court textbooks, he also participated in the compilation of two textbooks, "Criminal Procedure Law" and "Evidence Law", edited by his mentor Professor Chen Guangzhong. The former has been published in the 7th edition, and the latter has been published in the 5th edition. "I am independently writing the textbook "Evidence Law" and hope to revise it 4-5 times before retirement, so I have to speed up the progress." Chen Xuequan said with a smile.
Public-minded, responsible and simple self-worth
Lawyer is another important identity of Chen Xuequan. During his graduate studies, he followed his tutor in legal aid work. He fell in love with criminal defense work since the first criminal case he defended as a legal aid as a student, which resulted in the client being acquitted with a suspended death sentence. "Let the judge's judgment directly quote the contents of the defense statement, and use all legal means to protect the legitimate rights and interests of the parties." Chen Xuequan has been using this as his motto in practice for more than 20 years. When handling cases, he has clear ideas, distinct opinions, rigorous logic, and concise and clear language.
“A teacher’s job is to teach.” Law is a very practical subject, and he has accumulated rich practical experience through handling cases for many years. This is not only a stage for him to display his theoretical knowledge, but also an important part of his teaching content. At times, he would share his litigation techniques and processes with students, often eliciting enthusiastic applause from the students.
When asked about his views on “China’s unique educator spirit”, Chen Xuequan said, “Teachers should all aspire to become educators.” Teachers not only impart knowledge to students, but also help students shape their character and values and help students grow. Under his influence, many students devoted themselves to the field of law and contributed to the rule of law. At the 2022 graduation ceremony of the w88 casino, Chen Xuequan spoke as a teacher representative. He said to the students affectionately: "I hope you can be a public-minded person and a responsible person."
