[Special Article] Choosing to volunteer as a teacher is the decision I have made the least regrets about so far - my story of supporting a teacher⑨

[Editor’s note]The Graduate Student Support Teaching Corps is a national demonstration project of the Youth Volunteer Poverty Alleviation Relay Plan jointly organized and implemented by the Youth League Central Committee and the Ministry of Education. Over the past year, they have been unswervingly committed, rooted in the grassroots, and used practical actions to write their own unique youth stories and passionate passion. In the process of fighting against the COVID-19 epidemic and helping to eradicate poverty, they were brave enough to take on responsibilities and were not afraid of difficulties. In a short period of time, they did one thing after another that they will never forget. Now, as their service period is about to expire, the Propaganda Department of the Party Committee and the Youth League Committee of the w88 casino jointly launched"Stories of Supporting Teaching" column, share with everyone the unique youthful power of University of w88 and Economics students.

 

I am Que Junzhu, a member of the Yunnan branch of the 21st graduate student teaching group of the w88 casino. I taught in the No. 1 Middle w88 casino of Mengla County in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province in the 2019-2020 w88 casino year, and served as an English teacher for the first and second classes of senior high w88 casino.

I was born in Sichuan Province, in the southwest of my motherland, and I have felt close to this neighboring province of Yunnan since I was a child. Since I had heard about the mosquito situation in Yunnan for a long time, I made a lot of preparations before teaching. However, on the first day after arriving in Mengla, the defense line collapsed under the constant siege of mosquitoes. Mosquito coils and tiger balm became "good partners" in life thereafter.

What is more difficult than adapting to local life is adapting to the identity change from student to teacher. After understanding the students' situation, I felt "broken" inside - nearly half of the students had no basic knowledge of English, plagiarism was common, they were addicted to "machine selection", and they stayed up late playing mobile phones and games... These situations made me very distressed. With the word "responsibility" on my head, I felt tremendous pressure. At the same time, I try to understand why students are unable to concentrate on their studies.

Through exchanges, I discovered that the imbalance of educational resources has caused many students to only really come into contact with English in the third year of junior high w88 casino. Many students worked very hard, but because they did not find the right method, they lost confidence due to the impact of test scores; some students had a good foundation, but were only satisfied with the status quo and began to slack off. As a supporting teacher, I strive to inspire every student, teach students in accordance with their aptitude, and guide them in the right direction.

In addition to teaching book content, I focus on cultivating students' method skills, especially reading skills such as capturing information, guessing word meanings based on context, and grasping the main idea through central sentences. These methods can help students improve their test-taking abilities and enhance their confidence despite the current dilemma of insufficient vocabulary, and then encourage students to develop good habits of persevering and accumulating foundations.

After repeatedly thinking about the problems that occurred in the classroom, I found that I cannot blindly instill knowledge and methods into students, but should lead them to learn step by step. Due to the weak foundation of the students, I added an appropriate amount of junior middle w88 casino words in class; after demonstrating the pronunciation and following the whole class, I would ask students who had not spoken to read aloud individually. In the beginning, they would always hesitate or simply say “they can’t read”. After my repeated encouragement, one student shyly read it out in a low voice, which caused laughter from other students. I said: "Don't laugh, he has already read part of it correctly", and further guided the students to analyze why they read it wrong, "Which letter do you think he pronounced wrong?" Gradually, students no longer think that mispronounced words are something that will make them laugh, so they become more generous when reading words, and they can even actively read along aloud.

         During the epidemic, I conducted online teaching for students. Taking advantage of the time during the winter vacation when students can freely use their mobile phones, I organized students to use the word memorization app to memorize words and check in online. Eight students persisted in memorizing words for more than 40 days, accumulating an average of more than 1,500 words, and one of them accumulated a total of 3,900 words. In the two exams last semester, the average English score of Class 294 I taught ranked among the top three, and Class 295 improved by 9.4 points. After the winter vacation class division, the ranking of Class 298 improved by one place compared with the class division, and the score of Class 302 increased by 8.47 points, making it the class with the most points improvement after the division.

In Mengla, Yunnan, there is a group of naughty children

During my days in Mengla, I was always thinking about a question - "How to get along with these naughty children?" Perhaps the best way is to let yourself be "a teacher and a student."

The students are active in thinking and quirky. I try to use their way and perspective to see problems, learn popular mantras in the class, and find unique ways of communicating with different students. Students who are naughty and resistant to learning in class gradually take off their "masks" and reveal gentle and innocent eyes. They are not just students sitting in the classroom, but also lively and lovely younger brothers and sisters with real worries. Some students lack communication with their parents, or are troubled by interpersonal relationships on campus; some suffer pain that does not belong to their age, become independent too early or are too self-protective; some have dreams, but are cautious and dare not pursue them, and most are confused...

Some students have the habit of plagiarism during dictation. Once, after a student was caught by me on the spot, he actually said that he did not plagiarize. His innocent eyes were wide open on his young face, pitiful and delicate, and his acting skills were skillful, which made me feel angry and funny. In front of this "little actor", I exclaimed exaggeratedly, "What a great performance! I appreciate such good acting skills! Next time if I am caught plagiarizing someone else's work, I will perform it in front of the whole class. We can also watch the playback on the classroom monitor and select the best actor of the year." When I said this, the student who had just plagiarized smiled and lowered his head shyly. There is no other student in the class who is such a "little actor" anymore.

As a teacher, I have learned to give all kinds of encouragement to students. "Your English writing is very good, which means you can calm down. Try to focus on your studies, and you will make progress." "You play basketball very well. If you can do better than others in one aspect, it means you have unique abilities. Try to find your own strengths in learning."...

Choosing to teach for one year is the decision I have least regretted so far. I was able to get to know each other, get to know each other, accompany each other, and learn from each other. It turns out that being a teacher is really a blessing! Not asking for anything in return, but ultimately reaping the precious sincerity of youth.

When I left Mengla, I received a guest book and paintings carefully made by the students. One student couldn't help but fall asleep with a stuffed puppy on his pillow during class. He wrote to me: "My dog will miss you too." Another student wrote: "No matter how early you get up, you must have breakfast and prepare it in advance." "I'm lucky to still meet you after I was divided into classes."... It reminds me of when we cheered for the third graders before the college entrance examination, the students sang a song "Goodbye" - "I will remember your face firmly, and I will cherish the thoughts you gave me. These days will never be erased in my heart."

A gift from a student when leaving

I will remember that in Mengla County, Yunnan Province, on the southwest border of the motherland, there are workers who work hard to earn a stable income and live a simple and happy life, there are grassroots personnel who are dedicated to the people and work hard, there are soldiers who defend the border and anti-epidemic workers, and even my dear students. This year's teaching support cannot completely change every student, and it is difficult to have a lasting impact. But as a member of the Western Education Poverty Alleviation Relay, I feel extremely lucky to have integrated the power of my youthful struggle into the magnificent practice. I wish the students will gain the right to choose through their own efforts and take a colorful and regretless life path.
