On the weekend in Beijing, under the blue sky and white clouds, seven or eight old friends sat around the table as promised. Each of them piled the food and drink they brought on the table and started a relaxed and happy exchange and conversation. We have long been accustomed to such irregular gatherings, and we don’t need a reason to gather just for friendship.
Most of these friends, whose faces are no longer young but whose spirits are still bright, are university teachers and were all born in the 1960s. Among them are party members, United Front members, and ordinary people. Whether they are retired or about to retire, they no longer only worry about daily necessities, food, clothing, housing, and transportation. Instead, they are willing to join hands on weekends, find a grape arbor or a big tree, communicate or study, and enrich their spiritual and cultural life. There are researchers who are obsessed with herbal medicine to promote the culture of traditional Chinese medicine; there are amateurs in photography and painting who pursue the beauty of light, shadow and color; there are volunteers who are enthusiastic about public welfare and have been voluntary guides for the Forbidden City for several years; there are also nutrition researchers, health experts, marathon runners, etc., each of whom has used their own expertise and some have achieved some success.
The topics of the gathering are very wide, ranging from domestic and foreign humanities, history, morality, law, literature, art, folk customs, and beautiful mountains and rivers, to national events, current hot topics, family affairs, birth, old age, illness, and death, etc. On the eve of the grand celebration of the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, we often talk about state affairs and family affairs. Comparing the lives of our parents' generations, we lament that we have experienced the tremendous changes of the times. We deeply realize that the country's political and military strength and the country's economic development are the strong support for our better life. Our destiny is closely related and inseparable from the destiny of our party and our motherland.
In our childhood, from October 1964 to April 1970, the successful development of "two bombs and one satellite" of atomic bombs, hydrogen bombs, and artificial earth satellites was an important symbol of China's prosperity and a symbol of the great rise of New China.
