The soil layer in Qiannanyu Village is thin, does not hold water, is barren, and has little organic matter. "There are no trees planted every year, and there are no forests for afforestation every year." In order to solve the planting problem, Li Baoguo woke up early and worked hard at night, running through the ditches and ravines, analyzing data under a kerosene lamp late at night and studying ways to solve the problem. He braved the danger and used blasting to prepare the land to accumulate soil and flow. After repeated failures, he finally succeeded. Today, Qiannanyu Village has transformed into "the greenest place in the Taihang Mountains", with a vegetation coverage rate of 94.6%, and was nominated for the "Global Top 500 Ecological Environment Construction" award.
How to get rid of the poor label of backwardness in mountainous areas? Li Baoguo believes that the top priority is to reverse the current situation of "poor concepts and poor technology" among mountain people. In 1996, a flash flood occurred in Gangdi Village. Li Baoguo moved here with his wife Guo Suping, who also taught at Hebei Agricultural University. They conducted inspections and analyzes and made plans for growing apples and chestnuts for the village.
A blueprint is easy to draw but difficult to implement. When teaching villagers to thin flowers and fruits, they looked at the small apples falling all over the ground. Some people gave up and said, "These fruits were thrown away before they grew up. How can we have a good harvest?" When promoting the apple bagging technology, some people questioned, "Can apples grow up without being exposed to light?" Li Baoguo spent his only more than 50,000 yuan in scientific research funds to buy paper bags and taught the villagers how to bag them...
During the autumn harvest of that year, everything changed: unbagged apples could not be sold at a high price. Pruned and bagged apples were sold for 10 yuan each for five or six taels, and for 50 yuan each for eight or more taels. The highest price could be sold for 100 yuan!
Today, "Fugang Apple" is a well-known trademark in China, with chain bases covering 369 villages in the Taihang Mountains, with a planting area of 58,000 acres and a yield of more than 100 million kilograms. As a result, more than 70,000 villagers have been lifted out of poverty and become rich.
30Over the years, Li Baoguo has demonstrated and promoted 36 standardized forestry technologies, with a cumulative application area of 18.26 million acres. He has held more than 800 training courses and trained more than 90,000 people. Many fruit farmers have become experts. On April 9, 2016, the day before Li Baoguo died of a sudden heart attack, he still presided over the acceptance meeting of three mountainous agricultural projects in Hebei Province in Shijiazhuang. "As an agricultural science and technology worker, you should build your laboratory in the fields and write your papers on the earth."
