This lecture invited two senior experts in the field of translation: Professor Lei Ning, associate professor of the English Department of China Foreign Affairs University and former director of the Training Division of the Translation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Professor Charles Qin OAM, Australian simultaneous interpretation expert and general manager of Chin Communications. The lecture was hosted by Professor Colin Clark, Australian Director of the Confucius Institute, and Mr. Monty Singh, Director of the International Affairs Department of Victoria University, delivered a welcome speech.

Teacher Lei Ning and Professor Qin Lushan gave keynote speeches successively. Before teaching at the China Foreign Affairs University, Mr. Lei served as the director of the Training Division of the Translation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served as an interpreter for the Prime Minister of the State Council. In this lecture, she introduced the differences between Chinese culture and most Western cultures in terms of professional attire, business dinners, drinking culture, social events, professional ethics, etc., and shared various wonderful cases she encountered during her years of translation in diplomatic situations.

Professor Qin Lushan holds a special-level translation qualification from the Australian National Translation Bureau. He has served as an interpreter for leaders of China, Australia and the United States for many times. He is known by the industry and the public as the first simultaneous interpreter of Chinese descent in Australia. He has published many books and served as a visiting professor in many universities. In 2016, Professor Qin was awarded the "Medal of Australia" by Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom for his long-term service and contribution to Australian society. In this lecture, Professor Qin introduced some of the more traditional concepts in Chinese culture, such as workplace hierarchy, relationships and face, and collectivism. Through case analysis, Professor Qin shared with everyone his skills on how to deal with Chinese people in business situations. At the same time, Professor Qin also showed everyone the completely different body language of Chinese and Westerners through dynamic pictures.

During the Q&A session, the audience rushed to ask questions. The two teachers patiently answered questions, provided data and information for reference, and shared their own insights.

This lecture was held at the downtown campus of Victoria University and was broadcast live on WeChat video account and Facebook. The event gathered colleagues from the Business w88 casino and International Department of Victoria University, doctoral students at Victoria University, colleagues from La Trobe University and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and representatives from the Australian Chinese Writers Association and other communities. The online live broadcast received strong support from UIBE colleagues, students and more than 500 Chinese and Australian viewers.

UIBE The Business Confucius Institute at the University of Victoria in Australia will launch a series of lectures/forums on China-Australia business themes in 2022. It aims to build a platform for business exchanges between China and Australia through the resources of the Confucius Institute and Chinese and Australian cooperative universities, share industry information, and promote more business cooperation. At the same time, the Confucius Institute has created the "Doing Business with China Hub" information resource library on its official website to continuously update information and data related to China-Australia business. It has also set up an "Economy Corner" column on the official website to publish columns written by the Chinese director every month. In the future, it will continue to carry out a series of China-Australia business-themed work to contribute to China-Australia exchanges.
