In order to allow students and local residents to experience the atmosphere of the Chinese Lunar New Year and the customs of the Lantern Festival, the Chinese and Russian directors of the Confucius Institute at the Russian State University for the Humanities led the teachers of the Confucius Institute to make careful preparations. The event was personally hosted by Professor Yi Fucheng, the Russian dean. First of all, Professor Han Lihua, the Chinese dean, introduced the origin and customs of the Lantern Festival. With the slideshow pictures, everyone intuitively understood the Chinese customs of lighting palace lanterns, setting off fireworks, guessing lantern riddles, dancing dragons and lions, and eating Lantern Festival at family reunions during the Lantern Festival.

Next, Chinese teacher Li Tao introduced the origin of the Spring Festival and related folk customs; teacher Yu Jun explained the origin of dumplings and the making process. While introducing, the two teachers also led the Russian students to play interactive games and review Spring Festival customs.

Confucius Institute Lecture

In order to allow students to better experience Chinese culture, Chinese teachers and students studying in Russia demonstrated on the spot how to make dumplings, make glutinous rice balls, cook dumplings, and boil glutinous rice balls. The Russian students gathered around enthusiastically, learning on the spot and doing it themselves, trying to roll out dough, make dumplings, and make glutinous rice balls. Everyone wants to learn how to make Chinese dumplings in a short time so that they can try making dumplings at home.

After the on-site experience and interaction, the most exciting part of tasting Chinese food began. In order to allow everyone to taste authentic Chinese food, Dean Han Lihua personally formulated the recipes. From the combination of the dishes to the color, flavor and shape of the dishes, he personally checked and gave constant advice on every aspect. The purpose was to ensure that this event of tasting Chinese food, learning Chinese, and celebrating the Lantern Festival was a complete success.

The guests present tasted Chinese food, exchanged their impressions of Chinese food and their experiences in learning Chinese and Chinese culture. When the glutinous rice balls and steaming dumplings, which are full of reunion, were cooked and served, everyone praised them.
