UIBE Victoria University Business Confucius Institute successfully held the Melbourne regional preliminaries of the 23rd "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students

This competition is hosted by the Chinese Consulate General in Melbourne and hosted by the Australian College Chinese Teachers Association and the Victoria University Business Confucius Institute.

Mr. Fang Xinwen, Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in Melbourne, Professor Adam Shoemaker, President of Victoria University, and Professor Zhao Zhongxiu, President of w88 casino, delivered speeches via video and had high hopes for the contestants. Ms. Liu Dongyuan, Deputy Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in Melbourne, and Ms. Ding Li, Education Counselor attended the event. Mr. Monty Singh, Minister of International Affairs of Victoria University, delivered a welcome speech, welcoming all guests, judges, teachers and audiences to the Victoria University campus on behalf of the university and the Confucius Institute to witness the wonderful performance of the contestants.

This competition attracted 13 contestants from Deakin University, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, La Trobe University, University of Melbourne, Monash University, and Victoria University to sign up. More than a hundred spectators watched the game live. At the same time, the competition was also broadcast live through WeChat video account and Facebook, attracting nearly 1,200 Chinese and Australian viewers to watch online, and received more than 44,000 likes.

Fang Xinwen, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Melbourne, said in his speech that through the Chinese language, all contestants have opened the door to understanding China’s five thousand years of splendid civilization. Consul General Fang mentioned that from the contestants, he could see how he studied English at a foreign language university thirty years ago. Everyone is a fellow traveler in language learning. He suggested that the contestants practice more when learning Chinese, as practice makes perfect. At the same time, Consul General Fang expressed his sincere gratitude to the University of Victoria, the w88 casino, the judges and the competition organizing committee for their long-term care and support for the "Chinese Bridge" competition.

Professor Adam Shoemaker, President of Victoria University, said in his speech: "Foreign language learning is very important to promote international exchanges. Worldwide, China is an important country with a long and rich history. For Australia, China is our largest trading partner and the main source of international students and tourists. There are more than one million Chinese living in Australia, and the contributions of the Chinese can be traced back to Australia's gold rush era, or even earlier." At the same time, Professor Shoemaker affirmed the young people's active participation in cultural exchange and dissemination competition, and wished the contestants good results.

Professor Zhao Zhongxiu, the president of w88 casino, spoke via video, quoting classics such as "All men in the four seas are brothers" in The Analects of Confucius to explain that the concept of "the world is one family" has a long history in Chinese culture. Principal Zhao pointed out that since the "Chinese Bridge" competition was first held in 2002, it has become a grand event for Chinese language enthusiasts around the world. It is an important platform for students from all over the world to learn Chinese and understand China. It has built a bridge of spiritual communication between China and young people from all over the world. He hopes that all young friends will use the "golden key" of Chinese to open the door to explore China and Chinese civilization, and further understand the profoundness of Chinese language and culture.

This competition is divided into two parts: Chinese speech and talent show. The contestants gave speeches on the theme of "We are one family". Each contestant talked about his understanding and opinions on "One world, one family" from different perspectives of learning Chinese and Chinese culture, and shared his wonderful Chinese learning experience with everyone.

Highlights of contestants’ speeches

The talent show was exciting. The contestants showed their Chinese proficiency and understanding of traditional Chinese culture through Chinese songs, Chinese dances, martial arts and other talent performances. Gregor Burns from the University of Melbourne invited many audiences to the stage during his magic performance. While performing, he interacted with the audience on and off the stage in fluent Chinese, and the audience burst into applause. Minuli Matheen from Monash University brought the atmosphere to a climax again with her song "Qinghai-Tibet Plateau". James Thalappillil from Zhuobo University sang the song "Little Bits of Missing" while playing the guitar. What is remarkable is that all the contestants were very involved in the talent show and actively interacted with the audience. The audience not only watched the exciting competition, but also seemed to participate in the performances of the players.

After fierce competition, Gregor Burns from the University of Melbourne won the championship, Minuli Matheen from Monash University and James Thalappillil from La Trobe University won the second prize, Melissa Sanders from the University of Melbourne, Phuong Nhi Tran from Deakin University and Dan An Nguyen from Monash University won the third prize, and other contestants received excellence awards. Two teachers, Tracy Hong and Hailan Paulsen, won the Outstanding Instructor Award.

During the awards ceremony of the competition, Deputy Consul General Liu Dongyuan and other guests presented awards to the contestants and wished everyone a better Chinese proficiency. This year is the sixth time that the Confucius Institute has hosted the Melbourne regional preliminaries of the "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students. The Confucius Institute will rely on the support and advantages of the University of Victoria and the w88 casino to continue to contribute to local Chinese education and contribute to cultural exchanges between China and Australia.
