Orphan cultural relics refer to cultural properties whose origins are unknown or whose circulation history is interrupted, making it difficult to determine their legal ownership. This type of cultural relics is different from stolen or illegally exported cultural relics in terms of legal protection and w88 circulation. Currently, the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) is conducting research and institutional exploration on the legal attributes and cross-border circulation of orphan cultural relics, and promoting preparations for possible international legislation.Professor Ji Wenhua is the China liaison of UNIDROIT and has profound attainments in the fields of foreign-related rule of law and other fields. As a Chinese expert in the UNIDROIT Orphan Cultural Relics Legislation Working Group, Research Librarian Zhang Jianhong plays an important role in providing advice and suggestions. Against this background, this interdisciplinary seminar is of positive significance. In the keynote speech,Professor Ji WenhuaIntroduced the important responsibilities, international influence and legislative characteristics of UNIDROIT as the main international commercial private law unification organization, pointing out that its legislative practice in private law fields such as contracts, guarantees, and cultural relics provides important reference for various countries, and its expert legislative characteristics also provide precious opportunities for scholars from various countries to participate in the global rule of law. It focused on introducing the legislative background, main legal framework and institutional norms of the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects. Professor Ji Wenhua also put forward preliminary thoughts on China and Chinese scholars’ strengthening participation in UNIDROIT work.

Zhang Jianhong Research LibrarianReviewed the process of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law's handling of issues such as illegal transfers of cultural relics and their return and restitution, described the process of proposing the issue of international legislation on orphan cultural relics and the focus of disagreement or controversy in the discussions of the Orphan Cultural Relics Working Group, and proposed thoughts and prospects for the next step of research.

Wu Aijie, a doctoral student in international law, analyzed and introduced the relevant responses to the newly revised "Cultural Relics Protection Law" in 2024 focusing on the issue of "orphan cultural relics".
This interdisciplinary seminar held an in-depth discussion around the special type of cultural relics "orphan cultural relics". The participating speakers shared their opinions from different perspectives such as law and cultural relics.
