Ding Long: There are always some things worth persevering

2013Year8month20, "People's Daily" published an article titled "Developing Countries Should Be Wary of the Democratic Trap", which was subsequently reprinted by many media at home and abroad. The author of the article isDing Long, Associate Professor, Department of Arabic, w88 casino, at that time, he had just returned from a visit to Harvard, carrying hundreds of books and full of new ideas about the Middle East.

Hundreds of books that have traveled across the ocean

2011Nian Dinglong applied for the Sino-US Fulbright exchange program. With his outstanding comprehensive ability, he stood out from five to six hundred scholars across the country and got the opportunity to study in the United States.2012Year9Month Solstice2013Year7In August, he served as a Fulbright Research Scholar at the Center for Middle East Studies at Harvard University.

Ding Long’s research direction is Middle Eastern politics. At Harvard, there are related lectures and seminars almost every day. In one year, he took four doctoral courses and had regular exchanges with scholars from Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and other universities. He felt very benefited from the collision of these ideas: "Dialogue with masters, knowing what they are concerned about and researching, can better understand the academic frontier, which is always more enlightening than working alone behind closed doors."

Ding Long appreciates Harvard scholars’ enthusiasm for academic study and selfless research. When he had a little free time, he would study quietly in the Harvard library. There he read a lot, thought deeply, and was constantly inspired. Compared with his overseas study experience when he was young, Ding Long felt that when he was at Harvard, his "thinking was more directional and his research was more focused."

When he returned home, Ding Long brought back hundreds of books, many of which were scanned materials. Because he was overweight, he also paid a lot of fines. In fact, this is the second batch of books he has brought back. When asked why he did this, he directly picked up a book on his desk and said: "This is the book I brought back at that time. I will start teaching it to the students next month." He hopes that his trip to Harvard will benefit not only himself, but also his students. He passed on this cutting-edge knowledge to students, hoping that they would gain new inspiration and grow into pillars of Middle Eastern studies.

The accumulated water eventually becomes an abyss

17At the age of 13485_13536|, Ding Long came to the w88 casino (then known as the Institute of Foreign w88) to study Arabic. After completing his studies, he stayed at the University of International w88 and Economics to teach.17Year. He said with a smile: “I spent most of my life at the University of International w88.”

If you want to summarize Ding Long’s character, “persistence” must be a very prominent word in it. When he was in college, computers were not yet widely available, so he listened to Arabic programs on the radio late at night, almost every night for four years in college. "Until now, listening is still the most prominent aspect of my Arabic language ability." This is true for learning Arabic, and it is also true for learning English. After so many years of graduation and working, Ding Long still insists on learning English. He believes that Arabic is his specialty, but English is an indispensable tool for daily work and foreign communication. It was this accumulation of persistence that allowed Ding Long to remain calm when faced with dozens of pages of English materials when applying for the Fulbright Program. His proficiency in Arabic and English has made his Middle Eastern studies career even more powerful.

The accumulated habits were also used by Ding Long in the classroom. In many years of teaching practice, Ding Long has developed a unique set of teaching methods. He attaches great importance to the expansion of students' knowledge and vocabulary. At first, the students complained, but after long-term persistence, the students' foreign language proficiency improved significantly. His students always rank among the best in the annual Arabic proficiency exams.

In addition to his daily work of teaching Arabic, Ding Long is an outstanding young scholar engaged in Middle Eastern studies. He is the host of the National Social Science Fund Project, was selected into the "Outstanding Young Scholars Cultivation Program" of the w88 casino, and has published many papers in authoritative domestic academic journals. Ding Long, now the deputy dean of the w88 casino of Foreign Languages, even though he is busy with a lot of administrative work during the day, he still keeps an Arabic book at hand and translates a paragraph when he has time.

"People always have to have some spiritual pursuits." Ding Long said. Perhaps it is precisely because of this pursuit that he persists in the job he loves, teaching and researching with great concentration. Accumulating soil creates mountains, accumulating water creates abyss, only thick accumulation can make thin hair. Ding Long understands this truth well. In his world, there are always things worth holding on to.
