Professor Wu Jiewei graduated from the Department of Eastern Languages and Literatures of Peking University. He has been engaged in research on Southeast Asian culture, Southeast Asian history and the national conditions of the Philippines for many years, and has published many important results. He also serves as the executive director and deputy secretary-general of the China Association for Southeast Asian Studies, the executive director of the China Foreign Language Non-Common Language Teaching Research Association, and the director of the Chinese Overseas Chinese History Society. He has certain influence in the academic world.

Starting from the historical evolution and development trajectory of the political form of Southeast Asian countries, Professor Wu Jiewei proposed a classic expression of the political and cultural characteristics of Southeast Asia: country first, society first; family as root, society as the basis; care and assistance, respect for individuals; seeking common ground while reserving differences, consultation and consensus; racial harmony, religious tolerance. On this basis, we interpret the role of family politics and strongman politics in the transformation of Southeast Asian countries' political systems from democratic-competitive to bureaucratic-authoritarian after World War II. After that, Teacher Wu used the Philippines as a case to focus on the game relationship between family politics and strongman politics. He pointed out that Duterte’s coming to power showed the resurgence of strongman politics and was a manifestation of the familial and personal tendencies of Philippine political parties. Copying the Western democratic system cannot overcome the shortcomings of local political culture, that is, the entanglement between family politics and strongman politics.
