At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Wang Yuguang proposed his understanding of "what is a classic" based on the fact that college students currently have less time to read and digital reading has impacted paper reading. He believes that a classic work must have three elements: influence, timeliness and breadth. Then, he borrowed Liang Qichao's views on classics and focused on the question of "why we should read classics." When faced with the controversial topic "whether traditional classics have lost their vitality" for nearly a century, he quoted Liang Qichao's famous saying "As a Chinese scholar, it is necessary to read some traditional Chinese classics" to express his support for classic reading and the inheritance of Chinese culture. "Today we read traditional classics not only to acquire knowledge, but also to inherit and develop long-standing culture. This may be the best way to seek a perfect and independent self-character." He pointed out that for individuals, reading classic works can not only give people correct guidance on value choices, but also cultivate writing skills and personal temperament and upbringing; for a country, cultural confidence is based on cultural inheritance, and reading traditional classics is a reflection of a country's respect for tradition.
When discussing "Which classics should we read?" Professor Wang Yuguang said that many works by Chinese thinkers and scholars in the past dynasties are very important assets to us today, but a person's reading ability is limited, so he must read selectively.
