w88 casino News Network (Reporter Zhang Wenxuan Photography Dong Sijia)2018At 18:30 on December 12, 2019, the 16th lecture series "Reading, Walking with Classics" in the Library's Humanities and Culture Lecture Hall of the w88 casino was held in Room 109 of the library. This lecture was given by Wang Yuguang, PhD in history, professor of the Department of Information Management of Peking University, doctoral supervisor, and director of the Higher Education Library Science Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education. Qiu Xiaohong, Secretary of the Teaching Assistant Party Branch and Director of the Library, attended and presided over the lecture.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Wang Yuguang proposed his understanding of "what is a classic" based on the fact that college students currently have less time to read and digital reading has impacted paper reading. He believes that a classic work must have three elements: influence, timeliness and breadth. Then, he borrowed Liang Qichao's views on classics and focused on the question of "why we should read classics." When faced with the controversial topic "whether traditional classics have lost their vitality" for nearly a century, he quoted Liang Qichao's famous saying "As a Chinese scholar, it is necessary to read some traditional Chinese classics" to express his support for classic reading and the inheritance of Chinese culture. "Today we read traditional classics not only to acquire knowledge, but also to inherit and develop long-standing culture. This may be the best way to seek a perfect and independent self-character." He pointed out that for individuals, reading classic works can not only give people correct guidance on value choices, but also cultivate writing skills and personal temperament and upbringing; for a country, cultural confidence is based on cultural inheritance, and reading traditional classics is a reflection of a country's respect for tradition.

When discussing "Which classics should we read?" Professor Wang Yuguang said that many works by Chinese thinkers and scholars in the past dynasties are very important assets to us today, but a person's reading ability is limited, so he must read selectively. He showed the audience the statistics of recommended books from famous masters to major universities since the 20th century, and recommended books for different target groups.
During the question-and-answer session, teachers and students present actively asked questions. Professor Wang Yuguang answered questions from the audience one by one, and discussed with teachers and students how to read classic works under the theme of "Walking with Classics". Finally, Director Qiu Xiaohong thanked Professor Wang Yuguang for bringing this ideological and cultural feast to teachers and students.

This event is jointly sponsored by the w88 casino Library, the Academic Affairs Office, and the Seventh Branch of the Chaoyang District of the Kuomintang. It aims to enable teachers and students to better experience the profound traditional culture of the Chinese nation outside the classroom, conduct face-to-face cultural exchanges and in-depth communication of ideas with cultural masters, and at the same time strengthen the library's cultural education and cultural dissemination functions, and inherit the humanistic spirit.
