At the beginning of the lecture, Zeng Jiayang started from Quanzhou City, the birthplace of Nanyin. Zeng Jiayang mentioned that Quanzhou has an advantageous geographical location and is a famous port city that plays a pivotal role in both commerce and culture. Quanzhou's eclectic and inclusive nature is the foundation for the development of Nanyin. Subsequently, Zeng Jiayang introduced Nanyin from several aspects: its origin, music scores and musical instruments.
When introducing musical instruments, Zeng Jiayang and Xiao Peiling personally demonstrated the instruments used by Nanyin - four upper and lower four pipes, and how to play them. The upper four pipes include pipa, three-stringed instrument, dongxiao, two-stringed instrument and clapper, while the lower four instruments include xiangzhan, xiaoxiang, shuangling, flat drum and four treasures. Zeng Jiayang also pointed out that these musical instruments contain traditional Chinese wisdom, such as the pipa and the third string, the dongxiao and the second string, and the complementary relationship between yin and yang. Several musical instruments cooperate with each other to produce "different beauty" in the performance, thus forming a musical artistic conception of "silk and bamboo are more harmonious". Regarding the question raised by the audience "whether Nanyin will engage in cross-border cooperation with popular instruments," Zeng Jiayang said that Nanyin has cooperated with symphonies, pianos, etc. since the 1960s, but no matter how the cooperation is done, the tradition must be passed on. To this end, the two performers talked about their efforts to inherit and develop Nanyin, such as recording some Nanyin suites and scores in various forms. At the same time, in order to adapt to stage performances and competitions, Xiao Peiling said that the orchestra has also made adjustments to some performance techniques. “Tradition must be preserved pure, and development must be bold,” Zeng Jiayang concluded.
