In the process of getting along with students, I have always adhered to four principles: tolerance, respect, empathy, and trust. To become a true great man, you must first be tolerant. "Tolerance is great." I believe that keeping an open mind and accepting students' sometimes "alternative" ideas and behaviors, rather than forcing students to follow their own authoritative views, is the basis for cultivating students' creativity. Secondly, establish an equal teacher-student relationship, understand and respect students' choices. Whether I am supervising undergraduates or graduate students, I will communicate with students in depth, understand their ideas, give them the right to choose their own research direction, give students full trust, and provide support when they need it. It is the observance of these four principles that has enabled me to achieve true mutual growth in teaching (the mutual growth of teachers and students).
Ling Hui is the student who has left the most profound impression on me after more than 30 years of teaching, because her growth has also become a mirror for me as a teacher, prompting me to think about what kind of teacher-student relationship is conducive to the overall growth of students. The first time I met Ling Hui was one day in September 2004. She and another classmate named Zhi Zhi made an appointment with me via email, hoping that I would be their graduate tutor. When I saw the name in the email, I wondered why aliases were so popular among this class of students! After meeting the person, the most impressive thing was Ling Hui's eyes, which were big and bright. The name of the person in my mind fit perfectly with the person. Zero, as a number, can be infinite, zero wisdom, infinite wisdom. During the exchange, Linghui told me that she joined a charity organization during her spare time and became a volunteer to help patients with hemophilia. She found that the strategic management and project management courses she learned in class enabled her to engage in charity work more "professionally". In the process of answering her questions, I also gained a better understanding of public welfare undertakings. In the stage of preparing the graduation thesis, I very much supported her idea. Based on volunteer experience and work practice, I focused the topic of the thesis on "Research on Participatory Training in Non-Profit Organizations". Her thesis was refreshing and reflected her in-depth thinking on participatory training in public welfare organizations and her guidance on practice. When she graduated, her classmates joined the "Big Four", state-owned enterprises and Fortune 500 companies. Ling Hui applied for the Master of Corporate Social Responsibility major at the University of Nottingham in the UK. When reading her application documents, I was deeply moved by her understanding of corporate social responsibility and her desire to promote companies to create social value. After returning to China, she joined the Youcheng Entrepreneur Poverty Alleviation Foundation and became the youngest secretary-general in the domestic public welfare sector. I was not surprised at all. The foundation she works for continues to explore and use innovative ways to solve poverty problems, and has made outstanding contributions to my country's poverty alleviation, rural revitalization and the promotion of the growth of social entrepreneurs.
Under the influence of Ling Hui, I participated in the rural revitalization activities of YouChange Foundation as a volunteer, and also became a Falcon Mentor of YouChange Foundation’s Falcon Accelerator Project, using my volunteerism and professionalism to accompany the growth of social entrepreneurs. In the past year, I also entered the "Moral Education Lecture Hall" of the business w88 casino twice in a row to teach students about value creation in the new business civilization. Under the current broad-based admissions system, 90% of students will choose accounting and finance majors when choosing majors in their sophomore year, and students will pay more attention to the profits and losses of enterprises. What makes me particularly happy is that many students will share their understanding of the meaning of study and work with me after class. Some students tried to start a social enterprise in the Three Entrepreneurship Competition. From these students, I saw the younger generation’s concern for enterprises that create social value. In the new business civilization, enterprises, science and technology, and capital are doing good. Ling Hui’s story is an epitome of how I deal with the teacher-student relationship. Tolerance, respect and trust in students, leaving blank space for students to choose, and believing that they have the ability to carry out self-driven learning, can better cultivate students' independent spirit and sense of responsibility, and lay a solid foundation for them to take on important responsibilities in society.
