The lecture was delivered by Professor Sun Degang, researcher at the Institute of International Studies at Fudan University, director of the Center for Middle East Studies at Fudan University, and doctoral supervisor. Professor Sun Degang believes that most regional and country studies use land dividing lines as the basis for division, and this division has its own limitations. At present, there are relatively few regional and country studies based on ocean division. As an open civilization, the development and succession of marine civilization are inseparable from the rise and fall of empires. The Middle East is located in a land of three continents and five seas, and its development is inseparable from the ocean. Therefore, it is necessary to study maritime issues in the Middle East.
Professor Sun Degang’s lecture was divided into six parts: the Middle East maritime order, the Mediterranean order, the Red Sea order, the Gulf order, the Middle East maritime governance, and China’s participation in the maritime development of the Middle East in the context of a century of changes. It comprehensively explained the historical evolution and contemporary changes of the maritime order in the Middle East, and also explained regional hot issues and China-Arab cooperation in the maritime field. The participating teachers and students had in-depth exchanges and discussions with Professor Sun Degang on issues such as Mediterranean sea power governance, the situation in the Western Mediterranean, and China-Arab cooperation in the maritime field.
