Professor Chen Jianhua is a well-known domestic scholar in the fields of Russian literature, comparative literature, and the academic history of foreign literature. He currently serves as the director of the Institute of Foreign Literature and Comparative Literature at East China Normal University, the director of the Academic Committee of the Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education, and the chief editor of the foreign literature branch of "Cihai". He is a member of the foreign literature subject review team of the National Philosophy and Social Sciences Foundation and the chief expert of major projects of the National Social Science Fund.
Professor Chen Jianhua first briefly introduced the origin and development of Chinese academic history research. He emphasized the important role of academic historical research in absorbing the wisdom of predecessors, avoiding duplication of work, and achieving new developments based on the achievements of predecessors. He pointed out that the value of academic historical research often transcends itself and can deepen people's understanding of social change and cultural development processes.
Professor Chen further discussed the academic history of classic works. He pointed out that literary classics should refer to those exquisite texts formed in the long course of history that best embody the core culture and emotional ties of various nations. They can allow the world to appreciate the "most vital breath", "the most essential emotions" and "the highest imagination" of a nation and era. He emphasized that the academic historical research on classic works occupies an indispensable and important position in the development of the discipline and academic research. Taking Russian literature as an example, he explained the unique and shocking artistic charm of Russian national literature and the value of studying classic writers through the interpretation of Gogol's sharpness, Turgenev's lyricism, Goncharov's dignity, Dostoyevsky's profundity, and Tolstoy's magnificence and Chekhov's implicitness.
Professor Chen then took "Leo Tolstoy" (hereinafter referred to as "Tolstoy") from a Chinese perspective as an example and introduced in detail the basic aspects of its academic history research, such as its development context, scholar groups and research status. He pointed out that China's current "tuoxue" is full of opportunities. Since the 21st century, the group of scholars studying Tuoxue has become younger and younger. Not only has the number of related journal articles and dissertations increased sharply, but there are also many excellent works, which have effectively provided new theories, new perspectives and new methods for "tuoxue". He encouraged the academic community to try new theories or new methods to carry out research on Tuoxue and his works, which has not been done before.
Professor Chen Jianhua’s lecture lasted nearly two hours, and the atmosphere was warm. While teachers and students learned relevant knowledge about the academic history of classic writers, they also experienced and learned up close the scholarship and academic structure of previous scholars.
